Artist Statement about Historic Photo Public Art:
J believes strongly in public art!
"Some folks never get to a gallery or museum. For them, public art may be the only art they experience.
For others, public art enhances their time when they're out and about, a little breathing room, at a park, on the street,
at a hospital, airport, school, library, community center, government building."
J creates art that they can relate to directly no matter what their age or background and, of course, make them smile!

Her public art celebrates history, culture, people and place in an accessible format that everyone of all ages and backgrounds can relate to...using historic local images, local flora/fauna imagery, and multi-lingual text. It is knowledge of the community, people, events and nature that establishes a sense of place. Her public art is not only of honor and remembrance, but also fun and illusion. The goal is to create art that reaches out personally, visually, intellectually and emotionally across generations and cultures.
People in all neighborhoods of all cultures can find a sense of connectivity. J celebrates diversity and the importance of the individual within the local and global continuum. Her art will infuse your facility with a literal and thought-provoking atmosphere of discovery in a format that demonstrates strength and hope.

Please contact her if you have a percent-for-art or public art project…or if you want to enhance your company facility or home.
She will design site-specific art that your community, your family will love!

Murals look like pages from a scrapbook or bulletin boards with old photos, state flowers, paper clips, stick pins, text...all made of photo ceramic tiles combined with hand-textured tiles. Trompe l'oeil presents a snapshot of the town combining beautiful historic photos of important people, events, agriculture, industry, with hand-formed tiles of state flower, trees, gem, important symbols, etc.

Picture
Heritage Mural: Installed 2003. 4’x10’. North Ridgeville, Ohio, Library. Historic photographic images contributed by community members and the local Historical Society. Ceramic tiles create a touchable, durable surface needed for this very public site where children and adults have direct access. There were many connections bringing the history of the community to life. Inter-generational and cross-cultural interaction. A printed map/key helps viewers learn the facts about each image.

Picture
Summerhaven Community Center Lobby, Tucson, AZ. Installed 2007. 2’ x 19’. A linear, historical timeline expressed with photo tiles of beautiful old images of the region. Specific flowers native to the area and other icons and symbolic images tell the heritage and natural wonders of Mt. Lemmon. The area was resurrected from a devastating fire that destroyed thousands of acres, cabins and the town of Summerhaven on the mountain.

Picture
Community Bulletin Boards. Proposed murals look like old photos and fact sheets nailed to 10 wooden boards all made of photo ceramic tiles. The trompe l'oeil approach presents a snapshot overview of the history of the community by combining beautiful historic photo and notable facts.

Picture
Heritage Mural: Installed 2011. 8.5’ x 4.5’. A Kentucky library wanted to showcase important people, places and activities through historical photos. High-fire photo ceramic tiles withstand splashing from drinking fountains. A printed map/key helps viewers learn the facts about each image.
Picture
Family Roots exterior photo tile mural proposal showcases the agricultural roots of one Colorado town. A photo ceramic triptych of one larger-than-life historic image of a sugar beet farm family. Each panel is 4'x14'. Smaller photo-tile images are placed above and below, displaying the oldest known photos of the downtown.

Library: Individual Photo Tiles with Inspirational Quote            Photo Tile Mural Composed of Smaller Photos

Picture
Individually framed photo tiles with inspirational quotes. Installed North Ridgeville, Ohio, Library 2003. Photographs taken at the library throughout the years create 30, 6", single, framed photo ceramic tiles. Each includes a quote by a well-known person, from the arts, sports, literature, etc., about the tremendous impact that books, reading and libraries had on their lives: James Michener, Gloria Estefan, Andrew Carnegie, Frederick Douglass, Malcolm X, Oprah Winfrey, Alice Hoffman, Isaac Asimov, Rita Mae Brown, Toni Morrison.
Picture
Babe! 2002. Photo tiles. A single image of Babe Ruth is composed of many smaller photo tiles. From afar, one sees a larger-than-life image; viewed closer, the image becomes a ceramic “quilt” of other baseball players.
